EUREFAS unveils Europe’s first quality label for refurbished electronics at the European Parliament

Brussels, 15 June 2026. The European Refurbishment Association (EUREFAS) has officially launched the EUREFAS Standard, the first EU-wide quality label dedicated to refurbished consumer electronics, marking a major milestone for Europe’s circular economy and the professionalisation of the refurbishment sector.

The label was unveiled last week during a high-level event at the European Parliament, hosted under the patronage of Member of the European Parliament Adina Vălean, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, consumer representatives and civil society organisations to discuss the future of refurbishment in Europe.

As demand for affordable and sustainable technology continues to grow, the refurbishment sector has emerged as a critical solution to reduce e-waste, conserve valuable resources, strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy and make technology more accessible. Yet despite its rapid growth, the market has long lacked a common European benchmark capable of delivering consistent quality standards and reinforcing consumer trust across borders. The EUREFAS Standard has been developed to fill that gap.

A new benchmark for refurbishment in Europe

Created by EUREFAS in collaboration with leading refurbishment stakeholders across Europe, the label establishes a robust, transparent and independently audited framework designed to ensure high-quality refurbishment practices throughout the industry.

The certification is built on a two-tier approach, assessing both:

Product-level requirements, ensuring devices meet rigorous refurbishment and quality criteria;
Company-level standards, guaranteeing responsible business practices across the entire value chain, from sourcing and data security to customer service and after-sales support.

Independent third-party audits and oversight by a dedicated EUREFAS Labelling Committee provide additional safeguards to ensure credibility, accountability and continuous improvement.

Raising trust, accelerating circularity

The launch comes at a pivotal moment for Europe’s circular economy ambitions.

The ICT sector remains one of the fastest-growing sources of waste globally, while demand for critical raw materials continues to increase. Extending the life of electronic devices through refurbishment delivers substantial environmental and economic benefits, but scaling the sector requires greater transparency and consumer confidence.

The EUREFAS Standard provides a common European reference point for quality refurbishment, helping consumers, businesses and public authorities identify trusted operators and make informed purchasing decisions.

A milestone recognised at the highest European level

The launch at the European Parliament reflects growing recognition among European policymakers that refurbishment has a key role to play in achieving Europe’s sustainability, competitiveness and resource-efficiency objectives.

The event featured contributions from representatives of European institutions, consumer organisations and industry, who discussed the role that quality standards can play in accelerating the transition towards a circular digital economy and explored how industry-led initiatives can evolve into recognised European benchmarks.

With the introduction of the EUREFAS Standard, the refurbishment sector takes an important step towards greater harmonisation, transparency and professionalism across Europe, laying the foundations for refurbishment to become a mainstream choice for consumers, businesses and public administrations alike.
